Makkah or Madinah First? How to Plan Your Umrah Route

One of the first planning questions every Umrah pilgrim faces: should you fly into Jeddah and go straight to Makkah, or start in Madinah? There is no religious requirement either way — Umrah is performed only in Makkah, and visiting Madinah is a separate, highly recommended visit. So the decision is practical.
The case for Makkah first
- You arrive in ihram and get Umrah done. If you fly into Jeddah, you cross the miqat by air, so you enter ihram before landing and head straight to the Haram. Umrah is complete within hours of arrival.
- The hardest part is behind you. Tawaf and sa'i while fresh off a flight is tiring, but many pilgrims prefer to complete the pillar of the trip first and then relax in Madinah afterwards.
The case for Madinah first
- Gentler start. Madinah is calmer and less crowded than Makkah. You recover from the journey, adjust to the heat and the prayer rhythm, then travel to Makkah rested.
- No ihram on your international flight. You put on ihram at Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali), the miqat just outside Madinah, before travelling to Makkah — much more comfortable than changing on a plane.
- Flight schedules. Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz Airport in Madinah increasingly receives direct international flights, and the Haramain high-speed rail connects Madinah to Makkah in around two and a half hours.
How to split your nights
A common pattern for a 10-night trip is 6–7 nights in Makkah and 3–4 in Madinah. Makkah gets more nights because Umrah, repeated tawaf and the crowds simply take more time and energy. In Madinah, most pilgrims aim to pray the recommended 8 prayers or simply enjoy the Prophet's Mosque at a gentler pace.

Bottom line
First-timers who worry about wearing ihram on the plane often prefer Madinah first. Pilgrims who want Umrah completed early prefer Makkah first. Either way, compare hotels in both cities before you lock in flights: see our Makkah hotel directory and Madinah hotel directory.
